Teaching reading
Learn about evidence-based approaches and practical solutions for teaching early years students to read. Developed by literacy specialists at the Literacy Hub, this 7-module course supports teachers to implement the latest science of reading research in the classroom.
Module 1: The science of reading
This module takes approximately 40 minutes and covers:
- How children learn to read: the evidence
- Reading models
- The Big Six
- Cognitive load theory
- Explicit instruction
Module 2: Oral language
This module takes approximately 40 minutes and covers:
- Oral language development
- Understanding oral language
- Oral language and reading
- Oral language in the classroom
Module 3: Phonological awareness
This module takes approximately 50 minutes and covers:
- An overview of phonological awareness
- Why it is key for students to develop phonological awareness
- How best to teach the skills required to develop phonological awareness
Module 4: Phonics
This module takes approximately 75 minutes and covers:
- the link between phonics and learning to read
- the instructional practices underpinning the teaching of phonics
- teaching phonics using a systematic synthetic approach
- planning and implementing effective phonics instruction in your classroom
- how to assess and respond to intervention
